Overview
The Laboratory of Multiscale Material Characterization and Composite Structures is a facility that provides unique capabilities for the processing of polymeric materials and its micro/nanocomposites as well as the thermomechanical characterization of materials at scales ranging from structural to micro-scale size including the establishment of structure/property relationships, morphology studies, characterization under quasi-static, fatigue, impact, creep and hygrothermal loads and assessment of damage and failure. State-of-the art equipments include a Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer (DMA); a 2.5kN tension-compression-bending loading stage with data acquisition system that can operate either as a stand-alone device or be mounted in a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM); a press molding machine as well as a resin transfer molding (RTM) and resin infusion (RI) systems for the processing of polymers and polymeric composites up to 450¡C from high performance 2 and 3-D reinforcements, thermoplastics and thermosets for aerospace, automotive, electronic and other applications.
