Francesco Simonetti Ph.D., M.Sc. is the Director of USIL. He is also an Ohio Research Scholar and a Professor in the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics since 2011. Prior to joining UC he was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Imperial College London. He held a five-year research fellowship from the Royal Academy of Engineering in the UK which he was awarded in 2005 after completion of his PhD at Imperial. Francesco was a faculty affiliate at Los Alamos National Laboratory from 2006 to 2011 and has been serving as an Associate Editor for IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control since 2014.

Michael Fox
An undergraduate student in the Department of Aerospace Engineering and Engineering Mechanics, Michael’s research efforts focus on cryoultrasonic freezing methods and the development of aqueous nanocomposite colloid structures with improved ultrasonic performance. His experience in the automotive manufacturing industry includes metallurgical analysis, automated routine optimization, and tool design. He currently serves as Vice-President of UC’s AIAA branch and Development Director for ASME’s BikeWorks operation.

Kaden Wells
An Undergraduate Research Student in the Department of Aerospace Engineering, Kaden’s research has focused on defect detection of ice-encapsulated complex components as well as the creation of a uniform colloidal suspension which yields similar properties to solid aluminum when frozen. In addition, Kaden also was head of the ‘Structures’ sub-system in the UC Battlebots club. Kaden will earn a B.S. in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Cincinnati (April 2021).
